A Visit to Bath Bar

Confession:  This post was supposed to go up last month.  In fact, I’ve actually had this post ready to post for a few weeks now, but for some reason I couldn’t muster up the motivation to do a final edit on it and press post.   What’s that about?

Things have been a little quiet here on Granny Girls for a bit.  Life lately has been swamped with a healthy dose of changes, a new job, press for a new show, side projects and anything else you can file under “Makes Me Overwhelmed.”  I’m the first to admit that I’m not good with change.  And I’m also not good at managing my time wisely (aka I tend to overload my plate with way too many commitments, exhaust myself trying to “do it all,” then throw my hands up in the air in defeat and not finish any of them).  It’s a Classic Crew syndrome, as I like to call it.  All joking aside, it frustrates me to no end because it’s a repeated pattern that I always seem to battle.

So here I am a month late on posting this, but still doing it.  So that’s something.

Last month Amber & I were invited to check out a cute shop called Bath Bar in Hermosa Beach.  Side note: If you live in Los Angeles but hate driving to Santa Monica and dealing with the crowds, I highly recommend checking out this adorable little beach town.

Created & owned by Kristina Vogel, Bath Bar is a place where you can create your own custom fragrance (with plenty of help from their excellently scent-trained staff) and then add it to a wide range of bath products from lotions to perfumes to body washes and so much more.

Obviously Amber & I jumped at the opportunity to make our own personal scents.

After drooling over the decor in the shop (hello adorable couch), Kristina and her awesome associate Kelsey helped us create our own fragrances.

As you can see, Bath Bar offers a HUGE range of scents from floral to fruity to woodsy.  It was a bit intimidating to choose from their giant selection of scented essential oils but Kristina & Kelsey were extremely knowledgable and helped guide us through the process.

We each started with one scent that we knew we loved.  I chose Egyptian Musk & Amber chose Black Current.  From there, the girls showed us scents that paired well with our base scent to compliment and balance it out.  After much humming and hawing, Amber & I finally settled on our custom scent cocktail.

Mine: Egyptian Musk, Vanilla and White Patchouli Flower
Amber’s: Coconut, Black Current, China Musk & China Rain

After you create your signature scent, you can choose what product you want to get with your scent whether it be a body lotion, a body wash, bath salts or hair butter.  We both decided on a a roll-on perfume and Kristina whipped it up right in front of us!

Added bonus, Bath Bar’s products contain biodegradable, natural and organic ingredients, have no parabens and are free of cruelty testing.

Kristina was an absolute delight to meet.  Her passion for what she does is so apparent from the details in her shop to her personal care for her customers.

Also, Kelsey has an amazing line of candles that are sold at Bath Bar called Piece by Paz.  They are made from recycled wine bottles and smell AMAZING!  Naturally I had to buy one.  I chose Bad Habit, a mix of “sweet tobacco, creamy vanilla and crisp white tea.”

We had so much fun learning about scents and meeting Kristina and Kelsey.  If you are ever in the Hermosa Beach area you should definitely check them out.  They also host parties in their space where everyone gets to make their own scented bath product.  And if you aren’t in Southern California, you can buy their products online here

And thanks for being cool with my absence around here.

Girls' Trip to Ojai

It’s hard to put into words how amazing our girls' trip to Ojai was.  If you follow us on Instagram, you probably saw some beautiful pictures of a whimsical cabin and four girls enchanted by things like orange trees.

As I’ve been sorting through the photos for this post, I can’t help but dream about returning to this peaceful place.  It was probably one of my first trips where I didn’t come home feeling like I needed a vacation from the vacation.  You know those trips where you come home more tired than when you left?  Not the case with this one.  There was something magical and soothing about this hidden gem.  The air was crisp, clean and fresh, the food was delicious, the people were incredibly friendly, and the company was perfect.

The house we stayed at was an adorable guest cabin with a fireplace (in which I failed to keep a flame going for longer than 10 minutes), enough cozy crochet blankets for all of us, and a huge front deck complete with granny rocking chairs.  The property was filled with flowers, fruit trees, avocado trees, a vineyard, chickens, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

Most of our mornings were spent drinking coffee on the front porch while munching on Amber’s homemade biscotti and granola, chatting about anything from funny childhood stories to deep thoughts on life.  Then we would slowly get ready to venture out to the little town and see where the day took us.

I think all of us girls agreed to go on this trip with our only agenda being to relax, explore and enjoy.  It created an environment of carefree adventures.  We went to the beach, cute cafes, local restaurants, charming bookstores, went for walks around the neighborhood and spent a lot of time on that front porch.

My favorite part of each day was, without question, the sunset.  On the property there was a cozy seating area for us to drink some wine (or a mama-to-be “mocktail”) and sit in awe of the sun setting into the ocean.  There’s something soothing about taking in the immense ocean that makes my problems feel so unimportant.

Needless to say, we had an incredible time.  Ojai, we will be back.

The Last Bookstore -- And My Secret Fear

On Saturday I went downtown to check out The Last Bookstore.  I don’t remember where I first heard about this store, but I had put it on my list of fun, new places to check out.  There are many reasons why I wanted to go exploring there.  It’s in an old two story building, it’s filled head to toe with brand new & second hand books, vinyl records & comics, it’s downtown and everyone online RAVED about it.  But the main reason I wanted to go was because the photos online painted a picture of an Alice In Wonderland kind of place, with dusty old shelves and hidden treasures.  Looked pretty rad to me.

I brought my camera with me because I thought it might be a cool place to share on the blog.  Now, before I dive into my fun adventure at this treasure trove of a bookstore, I want to talk a bit about a fear of mine...

I LOVE photography.  Over the years it has grown from something I occasionally dabbled in, to something I’m incredibly passionate about.  I own a growing collection of various cameras, from film to digital to instant to disposable.  I’ve photographed a ton of food, a bunch of spontaneous shots of friends, and a few staged photo shoots.  I truly love it.  But, ironically enough, I have a fear of taking photos in public.

So, cut to me in this whimsical bookstore, my eyes wide with amazement over the winding bookcases, the hidden signs and art installations.  All I want to do is take photos of every single nook and cranny, yet I’m paralyzed.

After I nervously walked around the downstairs, my huge camera tucked away in my bag, an employee told me there was a really cool art gallery upstairs.  I asked her if I could take photos and she said of course.  Instead of being excited about the news, I felt my stomach sink.  Now I had no excuse to not take any pictures.

When I got upstairs I was immediately greeted by this fantastic art display.  I gathered the courage to pull out my camera and started to take a few shots, when I heard someone coming up the stairs.  My heart started racing.  I quickly walked away from the installation, hiding my camera.  I suddenly felt like I was in the 2nd grade and the 7th graders had caught me playing childish hand-clap games on the playground.  What the hell was happening to me?  The answer was I felt ashamed.   I was embarrassed to be seen taking photos of a bookshelf because maybe someone, some total stranger, might think that it's stupid.

As I was having this “moment” with myself, imagining all these people judging me (which was in the Fantasy section, perhaps not surprisingly), a girl passed me who was TAKING PICTURES!  I immediately started to envy this girl, in total awe of her unapologetic confidence.  So I did what anyone else would do if they saw their role model/hero … I followed her.  Yes, I creepily followed her through the shelves of books watching her do what I so badly wanted to do.  (I swear I’m not a stalker!)

It may sound ridiculous, but by following and watching her, I got the courage to pull out my camera again.  My thought process behind this was that if people were going to look at me funny for taking pictures, at least I would be bonded with this girl (who obviously had no idea we were now “in this together.”)

It still wasn’t easy, but I found myself taking more photos, and the more photos I took, the less I cared whether people were watching me.  I was so engrossed, I lost track of the girl I was following (aka my personal Superwoman) and suddenly realized I was snapping pictures alone.  And, shocker, no one was watching me take photos!

I continued to explore the upstairs, snapping away, even gathering the courage to ask some of the artists in the gallery section if I could take their photos.

My favorite was the group of “grannies” knitting at Gather.  (Side note: I’m totally coming back to take one of their intro to knitting classes!)

As I drove home, I reflected on my terrifying/exciting experience.  We all have different ways of confronting our fears.  Some of us tell ourselves to just get over it and do it.  And I’ll admit, I’ve gone this route in the past.  But, for me, I don’t think that necessarily gets rid of the fear; just because I do it, doesn’t mean I'm not still afraid of it.  The missing step is understanding the fear.  WHY am I afraid of this?  By understanding the root of the fear, I can be more compassionate towards myself, and I can try and work through it instead of beating myself up about it.  And truthfully, how are you supposed to get over something that you are afraid of if you don’t understand why you are scared of it in the first place?

Basically this all boils down to me owning who I am.  Owning that I am the girl who is inspired to take a photo of a cool book display and not caring what other people think of that.  It’s a learning process and, at times, I’m still stumbling along, but instead of avoiding it, I'm facing it.  And that makes me happy.  That makes me proud.  That makes me who I am.

What scares you?  How do you overcome it?

PS Thanks to the random girl in the store for taking photos and leading the way, even though you had no idea you were doing that for me.

PPS I realize I didn't really talk that much about The Last Bookstore in this post, but if you live in Los Angeles, I highly recommend you check it out.

Granny Girls 2013 Collaborations

Happy New Year, everyone!  2013 was an exciting year for us as we spent the better part of it planning, brainstorming & creating Granny Girls which we finally launched with our first posts in mid-October.  Although we've only been up and running for a few short months (2.5 to be exact) we have been overwhelmed by the positive response and ever-growing readership!  We always knew that we loved the blog world but the connections we've already made with other blog-writers and entrepreneurs have been so much fun and have made us feel so welcome. Collaborating and getting to meet new friends who love cooking, crafting & adventuring as much as we do has been one of our favorite parts of blogging so far.  Thank you to ALL of you who have shared our site and recipes, re-tweeted and mentioned us in your own blogs.  We're so thankful and can't wait to see what 2014 has in store!  Here are some of our amazing collaborations from 2013 (click titles for links):

Granny Girls & Zooey Magazine

We have loved Zooey Magazine since we first attended one of their awesome craft parties back in the summer. Founding Editor-in-Chief, Lucia Tran, is an insanely creative and inspiring gal and we were beyond excited when she asked us to do a Granny Girls/Zooey collaboration.  We came up with a festive recipe (caramel corn) and these guys arranged the most fun photo shoot complete with adorable outfits, jewels and gorgeous hair and make-up. Lucia's team is the most hilarious group of people and we pretty much spent the entire shoot laughing our butts off.

Granny Girls & Western Living Magazine

We were super honored when Jacqueline Steuart from Western Living Magazine asked us to do an interview for their website.  Western Living is a HUGE Canadian publication and being featured on their site (and in their monthly newsletter) was amazing exposure for Granny Girls.

Westender Newspaper Gift Guide & Cover!

Although we have big dreams for Granny Girls we didn't imagine we'd be getting our first COVER within our first few months!  When Kelsey Klassen from the Westender Newspaper contacted us and asked us if we'd be interested in joining their holiday gift guide we jumped at the chance.  We quickly organized a holiday photo shoot to go along with our gift list - and when they decided to use one of our photos for the cover we almost peed.  Receiving photos of our fellow "Grannies" posing with our issue made our day month even more.

Granny Girls & Shop Ruche

Most of the gorgeous clothing we got to wear for our Zooey Magazine shoot came from the amazing vintage-inspired online boutique, Ruche.  We both already loved this shop before the shoot and now that we've had the joy of meeting owner and founder, Mai Olivo, we love it even more.  Mai and her husband started Ruche as a hobby and a few years later were quitting their day jobs to run Ruche full-time!  Super inspiring.  Their clothing & accessories are dreamy and we were super excited to not only wear their outfits but to be featured over on their blog as well.

#GrannyGoals

We also set some fun #grannygoals for ourselves, one of which was reaching 1000 Instagram followers by January 1st.  Thanks to you guys and your generous sharing we got over over two hundred new followers in just a few days and surpassed our goal 10 days early!

Granny Girls has received so much love in only a few short months.  We're truly grateful for all of the support and can't wait to share with you some of the collaborations we already have lined up for 2014.  Here's to an amazing year.  Dream big, Grannies!
